Broadway Takes Newtown: Proceeds From 2 New Musicals Benefit 12.14 Foundation
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — You don't have to go to the Great White Way to see great musical theater.
The 12.14 Foundation's Summer of Shows: 2014 kicked off Aug. 1 with "A Rockin' Midsummer Nights Dream."
The world premiere of the musical was created specifically for Newtown performers ranging in age from 5 to 20.
In addition to four Broadway actors, more than 200 Newtown-area students are involved in the productions.
The "101 Dalmatians" musical kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 7.p.m. The show was also adapted specifically for Newtown and will involve around 120 young people.
The performers range in age from 4 to 14, and some of the set, costume and lighting designers will be Newtown High School students.
"Our mission is to develop a multi-disciplinary educational and performing arts center based in Newtown, Conn., as a living remembrance of those who were lost on Dec. 14, 2012," according to the Foundation.
All performances will take place at Newtown High School, and all proceeds benefit the 12.14 Foundation.
