Corita Kent, also known as Sister Mary Corita Kent, was born Frances Elizabeth Kent and in the 1960s and 1970s, during the social upheavals of civil rights, women's rights and equality, she made her mark on the side of peace and love. She entered the sisterhood and worked as an artist in LA for more than 40 years establishing silk screening and serigraphy as a fine art. Making graphics and pop art, Corita Kent used cultural happenings to promote her message. Cleveland Art's objective is to take the old and make it new again. Reclaiming, repurposing and renewing the "old" and "interesting" throw-aways means you truly have a one-of-a-kind piece of art work. The showcases and workshops are expanding, but luckily Cleveland Art still resides in Cleveland. There's a new exhibit of side tables, some made from 1950s oil dispensers like Pennzoil and Castor, and glass objects such as hand-blown tumblers, bowls and vases. At Cleveland Art, you can take your favorite piece home too, rather than just stare at it from afar like when you visit a museum.
