Sometimes it's a good thing to find ways to make your children see history as a living thing. The Latta Plantation, 12 miles outside of Charlotte, is a cotton plantation and living history farm, circa 1800. The beautiful grounds include the Latta Family home and farm. Tours of the house itself are guided, but you can walk the grounds and the nature preserve on your own. There are some exciting upcoming special events like the nighttime Ghost Walks and the Colonial Christmas weekend. It's well worth a trip.

There are more than 25 different species of raptors viewable at the Raptor Center. Walk the 3/4-mile outdoor nature trail and learn the differences between the species. This non-profit group rehabilitates and releases more than 900 raptors each year. It's a beautiful setting and a great outdoor space to enjoy spending time with your children.
