With nice weekend and long daylight hours, summer is the perfect time to perfect your basketball skills. Whether practicing your shots solo or looking for a pickup game, basketball can help you get some great exercise, blow off some steam and enjoy the summer sun. If you would like to get a great workout, head to one of the great parks or playgrounds in the area and take advantage of the plethora of outdoor courts. Located south of the city, South Park is a beautiful and historic park run by Allegheny County Parks and Recreation. With 2,013 acres to enjoy, basketball is just one of the many sports you can enjoy at the park. The basketball courts are located by the Black Ashes pavilion along with sand volleyball courts. South Park also has a BMX park and wave pool for your summer enjoyment. In addition, it is home to the Oliver Miller Homestead if you want to get a bit of history in with your game of hoops.

Located north of the city, North Park, an Allegheny County park, is a great place to enjoy a game of basketball with the whole family. A large park with 3,075 acres, North Park not only offers several places to play a game of basketball, but many other things to enjoy. You can have a weekend's worth of fun with your family or friends golfing, swimming and kyaking. This shady park has plenty of green space to enjoy in addition to all of its sports and recreation facilities.

Located east of the city in Monroeville, Boyce Park is a smaller 1,096-acre park that can be enjoyed year round. This park is also run by the Allegheny Department of Parks and Recreation. You can enjoy a full game of basketball with friends or just shoot some one-on-one with your best buddy at one of the park's paved courts. Afterwards, cool off with a swim in the wave pool. In the winter, you can dream about basketball while you are skiing down one of Boyce Park's runs.

Located in the Southside Slopes, this small play area run by the City of Pittsburgh offers a great view of the city along with your game of hoops. This quiet, small paved court is the perfect place to enjoy a quick, relaxing game of basketball while visiting the south side. Kids might also enjoy the adjacent play area. If the basketball court is full, you can enjoy a game of baseball at the nearby field.

Also located in the Southside, Arlington Field offers a larger court setting adjacent to a full rec center, when playing indoors is necessary. If you want to pick up a quick game or practice your shots without leaving the city, Arlington Field, which is also run by the City of Pittsburgh, offers the space to do just that. If you have little ones, they can play in the play area nearby and then you can enjoy some family time at the swimming pool before heading home.
