Like baseball, and apple pie, the ice cream sundae is an American staple that was created right here in the good ol' US of A in Ithaca, New York by John M. Scott, a local minister, back in 1892. Platt, who was co-owner of a pharmacy, would top dishes of ice cream with cherry syrup and a candied cherry and the two men named the creation "Cherry Sunday" in honor of the day it was invented. Strawberry and chocolate were soon to follow and become newsworthy as people couldn't get enough of the "Sunday" ice cream treat. Like many things, the ice cream sundae of yesteryear has only gotten better with time. While the broken sign above the walk-up widow may say John's Ice Cream, the place is actually called Jean's Ice Cream. Confusion and the forgettable exterior aside, this place has some of the best ice cream that side of the hill. The sundaes are big and made to order with any flavor ice cream you choose (lemon custard, lemon meringue pie, banana nut, butter pecan, bubble gum, peppermint stick and peach, just to name a few). What's even better, the budget-friendly prices won't empty your wallet when taking the kids out for a refreshing treat.

Holy cow is right. This "Kosher Dessertery" café serves house-made ice cream creations that will blow your socks off. Its Mooey Gooey Ice Cream Sundae (three scoops of ice cream topped with whipped cream, hot fudge and cherry) is served in an old fashioned ice cream sundae glass and is better than any sundae you can remember. Kick it up a notch with the Holy Moly Brownie Sundae for a few bucks more. While the place is small and can fill up quickly, many customers like to get their ice cream to-go and stroll the boulevard.
