Alley Katz will be celebrating its five-year anniversary in January, and anyone who has ever been here can see why. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. offering $1 off everything. Alley Katz has 12 TVs, four pool tables and even two foosball tables to entertain you when your friends don't.

Just up the street from CSUS is Capitol Beer and Tap Room – a one-of-a-kind mix of a great bar and a retail counter where you can pick up something to take home. You can check out the current 20 beers on tap by going to the website before your visit. When it comes to the list, there are only a few constants: there is always something on nitro, usually at least one cider, and usually at least one sour. This place is so new, you can feel it. It has only been open since August, but is already gaining a following. University of Beer has 100 beers on tap and refers to its happy hour as "Study Hours" every weekday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can get $1 off draft beer and $1 off all bar bites. It also has "Taster Tuesday" with $2 off all flights. On the weekend, University of Beer features "puppy hour" with $1 off pints if you bring your dog (patio seating only). Also watch its Facebook page for "bartender's choice" flights, only $6 for a set of four five-ounce pours.

There are always some really special beers on the list – just recently it tapped a keg of Deschutes XXVI Imperial Black Butte Porter (over 10 percent alcohol).
