Ask A Houston Expert: Easy Crafts To Do With Your Kids

Keeping children occupied is not always an easy task. Keeping them busy with crafts is an excellent way to not only bond with your children, but also to teach them to use their own imagination and creativity. Craft projects can include gifts for teachers, grandparents or even for items to keep around the house. No matter what the project entails, children and parents will have a blast working together while learning and staying busy.

Taste Of Summer Teacher Gift

This is a simple project for the kiddos. Not only is this really cute, but so versatile. Although the jar can be filled with a wide variety of items, Mariah shows it with lemonade. As she said in her post, "I opted for lemonade which speaks of summer to me." After filling the jar with packages of lemonade, it was nicely decorated with ribbon and a cool straw. This is everything a teacher will need to quench his or her thirst after a long first day of school.

Vacation Memory Game

Road trips and summer vacations have been in full swing for a couple of months. These trips can be fun for the entire family but the fun doesn't need to end after returning home. Instead of creating a Vacation Memory Book, use the family pictures for your own version of the Memory Game. Choose a group of favorite photos and print two of each, then laminate each one to protect them from wear and tear. What an ideal way to not only preserve memories but to have fun interaction!

Do-It-Yourself Play Dough

Play Dough has been around for years and it's a great way to encourage your child's creative side in addition to allowing them to explore new textures and shapes. With only a few ingredients, Mariah was able to make a batch that included a variety of colors. Making the Play Dough is only half of the fun and can be done together before beginning the really creative experience.

Do-It-Yourself Poppers

Formula Mom has an entire post dedicated to fun Memorial Day crafts, but red, white and blue crafts are appropriate for any patriotic holiday including The Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veterans' Day and, of course, Memorial Day. Whether your child prefers a cute wreath, an awesome centerpiece or even tin can luminaries, each one will spark their creative juices and allow them to have a hand in preparing for a special holiday. The color scheme can be changed to fit any occasion and each one is loaded with a ton of fun for the kids.

Do-It-Yourself Sidewalk Paint

Summer crafts are always a plus considering most children are home for a few months and there is only so much to occupy their young minds. Mariah posted a great list of summertime crafts including one for sidewalk paint. Paint may sound a bit scary to some mothers but this paint is completely affordable, easy to make and shouldn't stain if cleaned up within a reasonable timeframe. Made with just a few ingredients and food coloring, sidewalk paint will keep the kiddos busy for hours while they paint shapes, pictures or letters. Anything goes!
