Church Street Boxing Gym made headlines in 2012 when a video – an expletive-filled rant starring trainer Eric Kelly – went viral. Kelly is a former Olympic alternate, who said he trains "Wall Street nerds" at the downtown gym. While the facility's location means that Wall Street folks do frequent the gym, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis have also trained at Church Street. All skill levels are welcome. While the focus is on boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling, classes are offered as well.
Sword Class NYC
New York, NY 10016
If you've always dreamed of being a jedi, here's your chance. Among the offerings at Sword Class NYC are German longsword, siljun dobup, and kendo. This is the only school in the U.S. that teaches western and eastern sword styles simultaneously. Sword Class NYC's official name is Sung Do Kwan in Korean and Seitokan in Japanese, both of which translate as "Academy of the Sacred Sword." See the schedule for courses for kids and adults, novices and masters.
