The Spicy McDonald's Dipping Sauce Customers Miss Dearly

McDonald's may be best known for its iconic burgers and speedy service but the chain also has a fan-following when it comes to its range of dipping sauces. Classics like ketchup and barbecue sauce are a mainstay on the menu but over a decade ago there was one spicy McDonald's dipping sauce that customers still miss dearly: habanero ranch.

McDonald's first introduced this creamy and spicy sauce in 2013 when it launched three new versions of the classic Quarter Pounder. One of these options was billed as the Bacon Habanero Ranch and featured a smear of the new sauce. That same year, habanero ranch made an appearance on the Crispy Southwest Chicken McWrap, which was stuffed with chicken, a cilantro-lime sauce, and shredded cheese. Then in 2014 the sauce was made available in dipping cups and could be ordered with chicken McNuggets. However, it was discontinued three years later in 2017. On a Reddit thread discussing the sauce, one commenter said "I dont understand whyyyy McDonalds feels the need to discontinue all their great things...I MISS THE HABANERO RANCH" while another added "We need to get in contact with Ronald. I need that sauce back."

The sauce was missed so much that one fan even created a petition to bring it back in 2017, garnering almost 500 supporters. Despite the online outcry, McDonald's habanero ranch has never returned to the menu and has since become one of the discontinued fast food sauces we might never see again.

What was in McDonald's habanero ranch sauce?

McDonald's habanero ranch sauce was made with a long list of ingredients, including corn syrup solids, egg yolks, distilled vinegar, buttermilk, red pepper sauce, habanero pepper, and lemon juice. The buttermilk delivered tang and creaminess, and while habanero can make for some of the hottest hot sauces out there, the spice was dampened by the corn syrup and acidic vinegar.

Some fans have attempted to recreate the flavor of the sauce at home by combining pantry staples, like mayo, vinegar, and mustard to their favorite brand of hot sauce and spices. The key is to balance the creamy base – using a customized mixture of mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk — with the heat from habanero peppers, acidity from citrus, and sweetness from honey or sugar. Then you can add seasonings, like smoked paprika or garlic powder and herbs for more flavor.

To make things easier, we suggest combining McDonald's creamy ranch sauce with a dash of its spicy buffalo sauce to create a similar flavor profile while you're at the drive-thru. The fast food chain's ranch sauce actually came in last in our ranking of McDonald's dipping sauces but it does make a useful foundation for mixing with other sauce options on the menu (at least until McDonald's gives in and brings back habanero ranch!).
