Why It Pays To Take A Chance On Costco's New Cabernet

Even if you're not a loyal Costco member, if you're a chardonnay lover, you still have to acknowledge the chain for its role in the world of wine. As Taste of Home reports, Costco is America's number one wine seller. And although offering a wine selection that is nearly 20% cheaper than other alcohol retailers has definitely not hurt the brand's merlot revenue (per Forbes), Costco has been able to champion the U.S.'s wine industry mostly due to the high quality of the liquor it puts on its store shelves.

That being said, if you are both a Costco and wine fanatic, you likely have a go-to wine you like to grab from the retailer. But while there is nothing wrong with always sipping on certified fan favorites like the 2019 Chento Malbec (per Costco Wine Blog), sometimes you need to take a chance to discover something truly delicious. And now that Costco has added a new cabernet from The Prisoner to its wine collection, the opportunity to find a potential new must-have drink has presented itself before you (per Delish).

Here's why you should take the risk and put this new cabernet in your shopping cart.

This Costco cabernet has a taste suitable for new and old cabernet drinkers

A wine brand that sources its drinks from vineyards across California (per The Prisoner Wine Company), Costco has delighted many shoppers by bringing Prisoner products like the brand's black licorice-esque Saldo Zinfandel to its warehouses (per Costco Wine Blog). And, as Delish reports, The Prisoner's new Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon is no exception to the company's policy on making only the most top-quality wines.

According to the wine brand's website, its new drink blends cabernet sauvignon with the likes of merlot and malbec and features a black stone fruit and clove taste. Delish notes this cabernet is also low-tannin, or, in other words, it's less bitter and dry than its fellow wines (per The Spruce Eats), which means this 2021 cabernet will not only please long-time wine fans but will also delight drinkers just starting to explore the taste of wine.

However, there's another reason you should try The Prisoner's new Cabernet Sauvignon.

The new member of Costco's wine collection is surprisingly cheap

While Delish notes that Costco's price for The Prisoner Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon is substantially cheaper than buying the company's red blend for $45 on its website, the new cabernet actually costs less than even The Prisoner red blend's Costco listing. While prices may vary based on location, according to the Costco Food Database, some Costco stores may offer the  750 ml bottle of The Prisoner Red Blend for just $36.99. Meanwhile, the same website reports The Prisoner Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon is going for only $16.99 per unit. So you could potentially be getting the same amount of wine you would from the company's red blend in its cabernet sauvignon for half the cash.

If you take this new cheap and flavorful cabernet home, you're going to need to pair it with the right dish to truly take in all its taste. According to Parrish Family Vineyard, you can't go wrong with having a glass of this red wine with a red meat dinner. And the same outlet reports you'll also need to open your Cabernet Sauvignon at least a full hour before supper time to ensure your bottle has the chance to get exposed to oxygen and reach its peak flavor. Then, you can try a flavorful and low-cost Costco wine that you may end up serving at your next dinner party.
