Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig Back New York City Soda Ban

Well, at least someone is on Mayor Bloomberg's side: several weight-loss groups announced their support of the proposed large soda ban in New York City, reports the Associated Press.

The most notable on the list include Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, the creator of the South Beach Diet, and the founder of The Best Life diet. The announcement came from Bloomberg and the Weight Watchers North America president David Burwick, who said: "There has been a lot of discussion about obesity, but little action, which is why we at Weight Watchers support what this administration is doing to help New Yorkers live healthier."

The weight-loss groups' support comes at a time when the opposition against the ban is growing stronger; the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices now says it has more than 2,000 businesses (not to mention 201,000 individuals) backing the opposition. The ban is still set to be voted on Sept. 13.

Correction: The original article stated there were 21,000 individuals supporting the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices; the correct number is 201,000 individuals. The story has been corrected to reflect the changes.
