Honolulu International Airport’s ranking was based on these nine factors: the percentage of summer flights with delays longer than 30 minutes (5 percent), the percentage of delays longer than one hour (3 percent), the percentage of delays longer than two hours (1 percent), average delay (4 minutes), longest delay (25.3 hours), percentage of flights canceled (0.1 percent), average longest customs wait time (46 minutes), maximum customs wait time (108 minutes), and the average Yelp star rating of restaurants (3.6/5). A total score was then assigned to each airport. By comparison, the second best in America, John Wayne Airport in Southern California, had 11 percent, 5 percent, 1 percent, 8 minutes, 10.1 hours, 0.4 percent, 18 minutes, 54 minutes, and 4.3 stars, respectively.

Although you should still probably fly into Oahu, here are 10 reasons to explore the other islands instead.

Rounding out the top 10 were Mineta San José (California), Seattle-Tacoma, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Phoenix Sky Harbor, San Antonio, Portland (Oregon), and Oakland (California).

The study also named the worst airports in the country, which were Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, Chicago O’Hare, John F. Kennedy, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Washington Dulles, Chicago Midway, Miami, and Los Angeles. No surprises here, as these are also among the busiest in the country.

The study used flight data from the U.S. Transportation Department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics for more than 4.7 million flights in June, July, and August, 2013–2015.
