  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 4 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 ten one-and-a-half-ounce cans beef broth
  • 2 cup water
  • croutons, for serving
  • grated parmigiano-reggiano or gruyere cheese, for serving
Directions
  1. Making french onion soup with a slow cooker:
  2. Preheat unit on range top heating unit over medium heat for 2 minutes and melt butter.
  3. Add onions and saute for 15 to 20 minutes or until medium brown. Remove from heat and sprinkle with flour. Add beef broth and water, mix well.
  4. Place unit on base and simmer, covered, at Setting No. 4 for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Keep warm at Setting No. 1. To serve, add croutons and sprinkle with cheese.
