Maple syrup (in season right now) makes for an easy substitute for your cocktails made with simple syrup. Try it with a white rum (like Brugal Extra Dry), citrus, and basil for a surprising spring cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 2 Ounces Brugal Extra Dry Rum
  • 1 Ounce lemon juice
  • 1/2 Ounce maple syrup
  • 1 tangerine
  • 3 basil leaves

Directions

Muddle tangerine in a cocktail shaker. Combine Brugal, juice, syrup, and basil on top of tangerine. Shake with ice, and fine strain into a Coupe. Garnish with a basil leaf.

Look for bright green leaves free of dark spots. The leaves should be dry and are best kept wrapped in a paper towel in a bag when storing in the refrigerator.

When using basil in a hot recipe, add it only at the last minute. Otherwise you will lose the flavor and fragrance of the herb.
