High Fiber Linked To Healthy Gums

We all know that fiber is good for us, and it keeps turning out to be good for us in new and surprising ways. In addition to known benefits like lowering cholesterol, controlling blood sugar, and "regularity," high-fiber fruits have now been linked to healthy gums, of all things.

In a study of more than 600 men, each serving of high-fiber fruits like bananas, apples, and prunes was linked to an almost 30 percent lower risk of lost teeth and a 24 percent lower likelihood of bone loss due to receding gums.

The study at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine first conducted assessments on the subjects' dental health in 1984, Reuters reports, and researchers continued checking in on them every three to five years after that.

The source of the link between healthy gums and high-fiber fruit is still unclear, but in the meantime, why not get a jump on things by trying out some of our prune recipes.
