TCBY Didn't Actually Originally Stand For "The Country's Best Yogurt"
Remember TCBY? If you grew up in the '90s, we bet you do. Even though the chain of fro-yo shops may not be as ubiquitous these days as it was in its heyday, it's still around, and has even undergone some redesigning in the past few years. So here's a trivia question for you: What did TCBY originally stand for? Hint: It wasn't "The Country's Best Yogurt"!
Give up? From its founding in 1981 until 1984, TCBY actually stood for "This Can't Be Yogurt"!
So why did it change its name? In 1977, four years before the first TCBY opened, a frozen yogurt chain called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" came onto the scene. When I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!'s owners caught wind of a competitor named This Can't Be Yogurt, they (rightfully) thought the new kid's name was a little too similar to theirs for comfort, so they sued TCBY, forcing them to change their name to the one they've had ever since.
Whether the knockoff was intentional on the part of TCBY or not remains up for debate — there have certainly been plenty of intentional (and hilarious) knockoffs of I Can't Believe it's Not Butter, for example. Either way, it's some pretty good useless trivia!
