Restaurant Apologizes After Employee Writes 'Ching Chong' On Customer's Receipt In Place Of Her Name

A restaurant manager in New York City is apologizing after an employee wrote "Ching Chong" on a customer's receipt in place of her name. Ziggy Chau, a friend of the woman's daughter, posted a Facebook photo of the receipt on August 16 urging the community to boycott Cornerstone Café's "racist staff" in light of "what is happening here in the USA," adding that President Trump has "made it OK to come out and be blatantly racist."

Chau has asked the restaurant to issue a public apology through its social media channels, though she claims that a manager by the name of Rocco said his employee must have misheard the woman's name. An update to Chau's post suggests the manager did in fact issue a statement through Facebook, but the café's post has since been deleted. A screen-grab from Shanghaiist confirms its prior existence.

"The situation leaves me no choice than to terminate this employee for this unjustified act," Rocco wrote. "As manager, I take full responsibility and I humbly ask for forgiveness for all who got offended."

In response, Chau said, "Everyone, let's be civilized now. There are many people that are employed by the restaurant whose livelihoods depend on their jobs there and should not suffer because one ignorant employee thought it was ok to make a racist remark."

The post, which has been shared over 600 times, has received largely supportive feedback — though some reacted angrily, including Richard Lyn, who wrote, "Only after you attempted to destroy this man's livelihood and that of other employees did it occur to you that it may not be their fault. If there is justice in this world you will be dealt with on the streets of New York in a very violent manner. F— you."

The Daily Meal has reached out to Cornerstone Café for comment.
