Former Chef Richard Oates Killed in Skateboarding Accident
Richard Oates, a 32-year-old former chef, skateboard shop owner, husband, and father of two, unfortunately passed away on Tuesday in a skateboard accident. The New York Times reports that the accident occurred last week Tuesday in lower Manhattan. Oates was riding his skateboard and hanging onto the passenger side of a Mack truck before he lost his balance and slipped underneath the rear passenger wheels. Oates was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. Oates attended the French Culinary Institute and served as the chef de cuisine at Left Bank and Freemans Restaurant before quitting the business entirely to open his own skateboard shop.
New Feeding America Initiative to Help Low-Income Families Fight Diabetes
Feeding America, the United States' largest hunger-relief organization, has launched a new clinical research trial with the intent of helping low-income Americans better manage and control type 2 diabetes. The clinical trial, Feeding America Intervention Trial for Health—Diabetes Mellitus has four major components: screening for diabetes and monitoring glycemic control, distributing diabetes-appropriate food, referring clients to primary care providers who do not already have one in place, and providing diabetes self-management support and education.
Ben & Jerry's Cofounder Dreams Up Bernie Sanders-Inspired Ice Cream Flavor
Celebrity-inspired flavors are nothing new to Ben & Jerry's from 'Yes, Pecan,' inspired by President Obama, to 'Whirled Peace' for John Lennon, and the famous 'Cherry Garcia' created for Jerry Garcia. Ben & Jerry's cofounder Ben Cohen, a supporter for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, has revealed his idea for a Sanders-inspired ice cream flavor in an interview with MSNBC. Cohen's 'Bernie's Yearning,' is a unique spin on mint chocolate chip ice cream.
