Holiday Gift Guide: Scotch

Long before people gave each other gift cards, Scotch was the universal holiday present. And we proudly carry on this tradition. One of our favorite things to do this time of year is to pair friends and family with different whiskies.

To help you choose that perfect bottling, we got Khaled Dajani, co-owner of San Francisco's renowned Nihon Whisky Lounge, which stocks more than 500 single malts, to give us five recommendations for our Holiday Gift Guide. His selections traverse the country, from the tiny island of Islay to revered Speyside, and even include a stop in Japan for a Scotch-like spirit. No matter who you're shopping for, you'll be able to find something of interest.

But if you're still feeling overwhelmed, we suggest reading whisky expert Charles MacLean's excellent and enlightening story on Five Scotch Myths. He clears up some popular misconceptions so you can avoid a range of potential Scotch pitfalls. (His article, "Whisky Straight Up," is another must-read and sets the record straight on how to drink the liquor.)

Also, our recent Gear Guide: Scotch features a few great accessories, from jumbo ice cube trays and cooling granite stones to gourmet mixers, any of which would make a welcome gift. Slainte!
