  • Melissa's first freelance writing gig might have been her coolest: she was a happy hour columnist for her local alt weekly. Once a week, she had to find and review a new hotspot.
  • When Melissa lived in Florence, Italy, her house overlooked the Sant'Ambrogio marketplace, exposing her to great produce. The fresh ingredients, coupled with advice from local vendors, provided her with a delicious food education.
  • Melissa worked at a five-star hotel in Dublin, which meant she received a 50% food and beverage discount at sister properties across Europe. She got to experience eating hunks of parmesan at the St. Regis Rome, a sacher torte at an old palace in Vienna, and fresh fish caught right in front of her in Marsaxlokk, Malta, thanks to that job.

Experience

Melissa joined Static Media in 2020 and has contributed to Mashed, Looper, and Tasting Table. Her journalism background includes writing for Raising Arizona Kids, a parenting magazine, and Phoenix New Times, an alternative weekly publication. More importantly, she has a passion for food and an iron stomach, both of which are the result of her time living, cooking, and eating in the U.S., Italy, and Ireland. Melissa's has also been published in "Bar Flies: True Stories from the Early Years" and The Belvedere, a literary journal in Dublin, Ireland.

Education

Melissa has a bachelors degree in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Arizona, and is working on her master's degree in creative writing from Dublin City University.
