Ranking 12 Oreo Flavors From Worst To Best

1912 was the year that grocery stores would never be the same, because that was when the first package of Oreo cookies appeared. Riffing off of the original chocolate-and-cream sandwich cookie from 1908, Hydrox Biscuits, Oreos have been satisfying our sweet tooth with their chocolatey exterior and cream filling ever since. While the classic Oreo certainly falls under the category of "if it's not broken, don't fix it," Nabisco has tried to reinvent the wheel by introducing an array of flavors over the years.

Some of the unique Oreo flavors have been hits, but there have also been some misfires. Some truly wild Oreo flavors have been created in the cookie's history, and fans have been quick to tell the internet what they think about them. Today, we are selecting some of the most talked-about flavors and ranking them. The next time you are in the grocery store and you want to throw a package of Oreos into your shopping cart, keep in mind which flavors are hits and which are total misses.

12. Swedish Fish

Over the years, Nabisco has gone far above and beyond Oreos' original iteration to introduce all kinds of flavors to the market. Some have gone on to become fan favorites, while others did little more than cause an awful lot of head scratching. One of the more eyebrow-raising flavors appeared in 2016, when the company launched a limited-edition Swedish Fish-flavored Oreo. The cherry-flavored cream was sandwiched between two chocolate cookies, and it certainly sent the internet into a bit of a tizzy.

Sure, Swedish Fish by themselves can be a tasty candy that many people seem to enjoy, but do they pair with Oreos' distinctive chocolatey flavor? As one Redditor noted, a love of Swedish Fish does not mean their flavor will still be enjoyable when combined with an Oreo cookie. They even stated, "My tongue was rubbing my teeth and the inside of my mouth for two hours, trying to scrub that flavor away." Thrillist writer Lee Breslouer was not a fan, either, sharing that right away upon opening the package, it smelled like "I accidentally spilled a bottle of cherry Benadryl on my kitchen counter." Needless to say, the Swedish Fish-flavored Oreo phenomenon did not last long, but it certainly created a lot of buzz.

11. Mystery

There have been lots of mystery flavors in the past for a lot of our favorite sweets, from Dum Dum lollipops to jelly beans and even Peeps. Taking a chance on a single lollipop or one jelly bean out of the bunch seems pretty innocuous and low stakes, but it is a different ball game entirely when you are dealing with an entire package of Oreo cookies. When the mystery flavor first appeared on store shelves in 2017, the race was on to guess what the actual flavor was, with suggestions including Froot Loops or lemon.

Nabisco finally revealed that the mystery flavor was, in fact, Fruity Pebbles. It turns out it was not all that much of a mystery, as many fans had accurately guessed the flavor ahead of its reveal. Unfortunately, some mysteries are better off unsolved, as many also took to the internet to voice their displeasure with the flavor. One Redditor noted that it was so bad, "I spit mine out in front of a dozen co-workers." They did go on to clarify that they are not fans of Fruity Pebbles in the first place, which we would imagine is an important prerequisite to enjoying this particular Oreo flavor.

10. Lemon

Some citrusy fruit flavors go naturally with sweeter flavors like vanilla, and even some flavors like orange have been known to pair quite well with chocolates and other candies. But it is definitely quite a risk to launch an entire product line of Oreo cookies with a lemon-flavored cream. After all, lemon does pair nicely with other flavors, but more in the neighborhood of other fruits like blueberries. Things can get a little dicey when you introduce a flavor as bold and as unmistakably sweet as an Oreo cookie.

There does seem to be an audience on Reddit that actually enjoys the lemon-flavored Oreos, but the cookie also has some of the loudest critics. One Redditor called them "nearly a flavor abomination," and opined that, "When the apocalypse comes, there will be fire, brimstone ... rancid lava, and the milk that comes from lemon Oreos." That is certainly some harsh criticism. There is an Oreo flavor out there for everyone, but it seems like reactions to the lemon variety are truly as black and white as a classic Oreo cookie.

9. Reduced Fat

In an apparent effort to remain relevant in the midst of a growing health movement in the food industry, Nabisco introduced a Reduced Fat Oreo variety. Fans seemed to catch on pretty quickly that this version was almost identical to the original Oreo, but with less filling. As one Redditor pointed out, "Might as well buy the thin Oreos at that point." All in all, the Reduced Fat Oreos missed the mark simply because they did not offer any true "health" benefit to customers, which begs the question: Why bother?

Fooducate rated the Reduced Fat Oreos a disappointing C-, and not just for the flavor. Despite being a reduced-fat snack, the cookies were still a processed food item that contained a significant amount of added sugars. Long story short, most Oreos fans are very aware of the fact that they are not eating the nutritional equivalent of, say, a head of broccoli when they eat Oreos. While the effort to come out with a Reduced Fat variety is understandable, it was probably not at all necessary.

8. Oreo Thins

Amidst a string of wild flavors being launched by Oreos in the 2010s, one variety stood out that actually had no change in flavor to the original but still took the cookie world by storm: Oreo Thins. Rather than change the flavor, the company instead decided to change the structure of the cookie, quite literally stripping the two cookies and cream center down to a thinner, crispier version. The thin version has 35 calories per cookie, versus the original's 53. Finally, a "healthier" version of an Oreo that still tasted as good as the original!

Fans took to Reddit to show their support for the Oreo Thins, with many claiming that they prefer the cookie-to-cream ratio of the Thins more. Oreo Thins seem to give fans of the cookie itself the opposite of other fan favorite Double Stuf: less cream filling. But be careful: The lower calorie count may lead you to eat an entire sleeve without a second thought.

7. Chocolate Creme

Oreo cookies have a unique chocolatey flavor that is hard to replicate. It's not quite what you would find in a milk chocolate bar, or the chips in a chocolate chip cookie. But there is no question that chocolate fans cannot get enough Oreos in their life, so Nabisco wisely decided to give them what they want: more chocolate. Say hello to every chocolate lover's dream, the Chocolate Creme Oreo.

If you are not wild for all things chocolate, then you may find the Chocolate Creme Oreo to be a bit too much, but if you like going all out with chocolate snacks, this one will be a home run. A review on Influenster echoes this sentiment, noting that, "We are chocolate lovers so Oreo chocolate crème cookies are our favorite." Another review said it best: "I cannot imagine my life without these!" Chocolate cookies with a chocolate cream filling might be a bit too one-note for some, but no one is complaining when chocolate is their favorite flavor in the first place.

6. Golden Birthday Cake

For those who are not into chocolate but enjoy the concept of Oreos, their prayers were answered in the form of Golden Oreos. The vanilla variety of Oreos has been a long-running hit, with its own unique flavors and spin-offs hitting the market over the years. One that caught the attention of many fans is the Golden Birthday Cake Oreo, with two vanilla cookies sandwiching a tasty birthday cake-flavored cream.

One Redditor pointed out that they liked the cream filling of these Oreos the most, saying that "the birthday cake filling is weirdly addicting." In the late 2010s, however, the Golden Birthday Cake Oreos disappeared from store shelves, leavings its fans to wonder if they will ever have the opportunity to try them again. There is even a petition on Change.org to bring back the Golden Birthday Cake Oreos which has garnered nearly 3,000 signatures in the years since it was started. Perhaps this flavor would rank higher on our list, if it were still around.

5. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter and chocolate go together like, well, like peanut butter and jelly. It is truly a match made in foodie heaven, with chocolate and peanut butter treats like Reese's sitting safely at the top of many favorite candy lists. So it should come as no surprise that Oreos decided to make their own spin on this classic flavor combo, releasing a Peanut Butter cookie with a velvety peanut butter-flavored cream filling. As you could imagine, it has remained a popular choice amongst Oreo enthusiasts.

Many fans across the internet have shown avid support for the Peanut Butter flavor as their Oreo of choice. One Redditor said it best by offering no explanation whatsoever as to why they thought Peanut Butter was the best Oreo flavor: "No explanation needed because they are the best." Sure, peanut butter and chocolate is not a revolutionary concept, but you cannot argue with how well those flavors work together.

4. Golden

Many Oreo flavors have appeared on grocery store shelves over the years, to varying degrees of success. We give Nabisco a lot of credit for experimenting with different unique flavors, but ultimately there is a reason why customers love to go back to the original versions. Case in point: Golden Oreos have been a fan favorite for many years, despite the fact that they're truly as simple as it gets. Two vanilla cookies with a vanilla cream center are all someone needs to have a satisfying sweet snack.

When it comes to top-tier Oreos, we've found that the simpler the cookie is, the better. One fan took to Reddit to explain their love for the Golden Oreos as well as the original flavor, saying, "I don't need to have the weirder flavours." They may be onto something, as the bottom-ranked Oreos on our list tend to be the more adventurous kind, with the classics rounding out the top.

3. Mint

As the makers of Girl Scout Cookies know well, the way to a sweet snack fan's heart is with mint. Just like how Thin Mints have been a hugely popular cookie for years, there is a beloved mint flavor of Oreos out there to make your breath smell oh so clean. But it's more than just a delicious taste that has some fans swearing by mint-flavored Oreos.

One Redditor shared that Mint was one of their top Oreo flavors. When asked to elaborate, they explained how the cookies not only reminded them of Thin Mints, but also "Christmas when my parents would always give us a lot of mint flavored candy." Taste memory can be very powerful — your hippocampus, a brain area involved in memory, is heavily connected to brain regions responsible for both emotion and physical senses like smell and taste. So if you have positive associations with a bold flavor such as mint like the Reddit user above, then anything that lights up that area of your brain will likely be something you enjoy.

2. Double Stuf

When it comes to Oreo flavors that have a ton of loud, vocal support, few can hold a candle to Double Stuf. If you are all about the Oreo cookie's cream center, then you probably already know why this flavor is so close to the top spot on our list. There is no special flavor with the Double Stuf — it just takes the cream center and adds more. It is truly as simple as that.

There are plenty of fans out there who are passionate about the Double Stuf Oreo, and when asked why, their reasoning is simple. One Redditor noted that the Double Stuf cookies "have a certain je ne sais quoi," and, simply put, "they're classic." Some fans think that the increased volume of cream is the sweet spot, with one fan sharing on Reddit that they think Double Stuf should actually be the "standard" Oreo, with the original done away with altogether. And yes, they thought ahead, saying that "the NEW double stuffed will be the equivalent of a quadruple stuffed under the current Oreo system."

1. Original

It had to be the original, right? There is a reason why Oreos have been stocked on grocery store shelves for over 100 years, and it's all thanks to the one cookie that started it all. When fans are asked to share what their favorite Oreo flavor is, time and time again the original is mentioned as one that cannot be beaten. No matter how creative Oreo cookies may become, the original still reigns supreme for many.

One fan took to Reddit to say, "My most favorite is just the original basic Oreo," while another user was much more direct in their devotion to the original flavor. According to them, "All flavors of Oreos except original are garbage," to which many others commented trying to rally behind their preferred Oreo flavor. Whether your favorite is simple like the original or Golden or you like more unique varieties like Lemon or Chocolate Creme (sorry, Swedish Fish, you will have to sit this one out), Oreos are one of the few snacks that can bring us all together to fight over who gets the last cookie from the package.
