'Pretty Little Liars' Star Shay Mitchell Reveals Her Signature Salad

Here at The Daily Meal, we're still reeling from the loss of our weekly Tuesday night date with Emily Fields and the rest of the Pretty Little Liars clique following the show's series finale in June. So we jumped at the chance to chat with star Shay Mitchell as she begins a new chapter in her career after starring in the soapy drama for seven years. The actress, now 30, actually grew up before our eyes on PLL (the show launched in 2010) and along the way she grew into quite the hostess, entertaining castmates as well as family.

Her go-to summer dish is a warm spinach salad. "It's very simple with toasted pine nuts, strawberry, and a light balsamic dressing, and it's always a favorite when I have friends over," the Toronto-born actress told The Daily Meal. Mitchell spoke as part of her affiliation with Belgian brewer Stella Artois' "Host One to Remember" campaign. In addition to her signature salad, Mitchell told us she can whip up a mean pasta.

And to wash it all down? "Spa water" — cold water with lemon or cucumber.

"As long as there are food and beverages around... my friends are happy," she said of her relaxed entertaining style. "I think being a good hostess means you can balance entertaining your friends and keeping them happy all while you are able to enjoy the party yourself."

Next up for Mitchell is a lead role in the horror film Cadaver , which will release in August 2018. Can PLL devotees expect similarities between Emily Fields and Mitchell's Cadaver character, Megan Reed?  "Other than that they have the same face and both have a flair for flannel... not really," she said with a wink. "Megan and Emily are both caring, compassionate people, but Megan is a little different than Emily."

We personally can't wait for Mitchell's new film to hit the silver screen. Only then may it fill the Pretty Little Liars-less void in our empty hearts. Click here for 15 times celebrities made headlines with food.
