Budweiser Is Taking A Play Out Of Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon For A Super Bowl Ad

Every year, the two best football teams in the nation go head to head in an epic contest to determine who will be able to hoist the coveted Lombardi trophy over their heads. However, many Americans feel that the Super Bowl isn't primarily about football. To them, the game simply serves as the platform for big-budget advertisements. These commercial connoisseurs would rather play this Super Bowl commercial drinking game than bet on which team will win.

One of the absolute best players in the Super Bowl commercial sphere is Budweiser. Some of Budweiser's best advertisements have revolved around its signature horses, the gargantuan Budweiser Clydesdales. Other advertisements have featured a persistent puppy, a party for dogs, and a gaggle of croaking toads. The company's 1999 'Wassup" ad recently inspired an Instagram chain.

During the upcoming Super Bowl LVII, Budweiser will air a commercial starring beloved actor Kevin Bacon, which makes reference to the popular "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game.

Have a six-pack with Kevin Bacon

To win the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game, you need to find a way to link Bacon with another celebrity using six or fewer films to form a connective chain of co-stars, per The New Zealand Herald. People have been playing this celebrity-centric name game for years, and Budweiser is capitalizing on it with its new advertisement.

The commercial, which is already available on Budweiser's YouTube channel, is narrated by Kevin Bacon. Appropriately titled "Six Degrees of Bud," it opens with a fake-out shot of the famous Clydesdales, which is quickly revealed to be a television image. Viewers are then whisked along on a journey with a six-pack of Budweiser. Each time another bottle is removed, the six-pack is transported to a new location. The sixer passes through a food truck, drops in on a game of pickup basketball, briefly visits a music studio, and winds up at a yard party.

The deeper meaning of Budweiser's new Super Bowl ad

It's easy to see how Budweiser came up with the idea for its new commercial — six degrees, six beers in a pack. However, the true meaning of the advertisement isn't that surface level.

In an interview with People, Kevin Bacon provided us with an in-depth analysis of the advertisement. To the "Footloose" actor, the six degrees game, at its core, is about human connection. When he is removed from the game entirely, it is revealed that all of us are linked, in one way or another. Bacon explains that in the commercial, the six-pack represents the thread that ties people together.

An Anheuser-Busch press release tells us that the advertisement will also bring back the company's former slogan "This Bud's for you." The tagline appears at the end of the commercial, when the last bottle in the six-pack is offered to the television viewer, signifying that you can also be a part of the Budweiser connection.
