America’s 10 Best Fast-Food Chains for Breakfast
Within the past handful of years, more and more fast-food chains have jumped on the breakfast wagon for a simple reason: People are up and about in the morning, looking for a quick place to grab breakfast, and the local fast-food spot is an obvious choice. But some fast-food chains rock breakfast better than others, and we’re ranking the top 10.
When you think about it, fast-food breakfast is a no-brainer. It’s been a long time since we thought of fast-food joints as purely lunch-and-dinner options (the Egg McMuffin did away with that concept long ago), and in their pre-breakfast days, chains were generally closed during a crucial time of day (called a “daypart” in the biz) when they could have been raking in the dough. Making a quality breakfast sandwich is essentially the same process as making a burger, so adding these new items didn’t require too much training, and once the ingredients and supply chain were set, rolling out breakfast didn’t even pose too much of a challenge. And there’s no shortage of people who love their fast-food breakfast; just look at how much McDonald’s sales jumped when they rolled out all-day breakfast!
Though every chain offers some sort of egg-cheese-meat combo breakfast sandwich, each is unique when it comes to the exact style of preparation, the amount of offerings and breads, the add-ons, and the non-savory options. In ranking these chains, we looked at each breakfast menu and graded them on variety, creativity, ingenuity, freshness and healthiness (Do they use real eggs? Are egg whites offered?), and number of offerings. In the end, one chain came out on top.
If you want to write off fast-food chain breakfasts as cholesterol-laden grease-bombs, well, you can be forgiven for that; we’re not going to argue that the bulk of these offerings are healthy. But many chains are going out of their way to give their breakfast customers some healthier options as well, and there’s one factor that can’t be denied: Lots of these items are insanely delicious. Heck, you can even argue that breakfast is the best thing that fast food has going for it these days.
