The Canadian Snow Treat TikTok Desperately Wants To Try
Many of us have experienced the joy of waking up to the news that school has been canceled and we've been awarded a snow day. When parents suddenly find themselves tasked with caring for a crew of bored children, they must find activities to keep their bundles of joy entertained.
There are plenty of fun food activities to take part in on a snow day. One of the easiest involves taking fresh snow and infusing it with your favorite beverage to make a homemade snow cone, per the Wisdom Preserved Youtube channel. (Make sure to stay away from the yellow snow; it is certainly not lemon-flavored.)
A certain Northern nation has expanded on the tradition of utilizing fresh snowfall in desserts and kicked it up to the next level. Taking a popular condiment and delicately drizzling it over packed snow transforms it into a delicious treat. Oh, Canada, when will you stop surprising us?
Syrup and snow come together to delight your taste buds
Several TikTokers have introduced internet users to a Canadian candy called maple taffy. TikTok user @letseatyeg filmed themself securing maple taffy from a food truck with the name Canadian Maple Shack. The truck had a metal receptacle packed with snow. Inside, a confectioner poured a pitcher of syrup over the snow in a thin line, then used a popsicle stick to wrap the solidifying syrup into a glob. Many TikTok users have tried their hand at making the same sweet treat.
It should be noted that maple syrup isn't taffy-ready fresh out of the pantry. You first need to heat it, so it thickens, readying it for its transformation into a chewy taffy.
Per Visit Montréal, this dish can be credited to the indigenous people of Canada, who routinely boil down maple sap into sugar. Today, you can enjoy a syrup-soaked meal at a cabane à sucre (sugar shack). Of course, every cabane à sucre dining experience ends with diners enjoying fresh maple taffy.
