Jazz Up Your Labor Day Festivities with These 8 Fun Party Themes

As we kiss summer goodbye with our bittersweet Labor Day festivities, let's go out with a bang. There's nothing like breaking bread with friends and family over a delicious meal. From a Jazz Age lawn party to a Southern-style porch soirée, we have a few themes you'll want to consider for this Labor Day.

Backyard Burger Bash

You shouldn't end summer without a burger bash! Burgers are a hit at any summer function, so why not host a bash dedicated to this American classic? Shake things up with a fresh and tasty burger bar (to help here is a classic burger recipe), and be sure to include favorite add-ons like guacamole, bacon, and lots of condiments.

For the Love of Denim

Nothing says America quite like a pair of blue jeans. Hard-working men and women put a pair of these on and head to their jobs every day — so what could be a better homage to their work ethic? Collect your family's old blue jeans and let the inspiration flow. You could easily cover tables in jean patchwork and use old pockets for banners. Jazz Age Lawn Party

Take your guests back to the Roaring Twenties by transforming your backyard into an elegant Jazz Age lawn party with lots of glittery and flamboyant décor (think The Great Gatsby). Create a signature cocktail mint julep and, of course, a cooler of lots of sparkling rosé. Cook up some summer favorites like lobster rolls, brisket sliders, and goat cheese fritters — remember to make them fabulous, but keep it finger food friendly!

Seafood Bake

You don't have to live in New England to host a delicious seafood bake. Gather friends by the
fire pit and whip out your old tin serving buckets to give your food presentation a rustic feel. Try serving a variety of shellfish, like crab and lobster. Don't forget the folks who may be allergic to shellfish — treat them to something like a fresh, healthy salmon. — Lauren Gordon

Southern-Style Porch Party

Get the taste of the South at your Labor Day party offering classics such as fried chicken, bourbon cocktails, baked mac and cheese, and the fruit of summer — watermelon on a stick. Set up your porch with lots of rustic décor such as wooden pillars, mix-match flatware, and Mason jars as glassware.

Tacos and Tequila

Freshly grilled tacos are perfect when paired with thirst-quenching margaritas — on the rocks, of course. Fire up your grill with savory skirt steak, grilled shrimp and chicken — these well-seasoned meats are needed for your delicious tacos. Don't forget to be creative with guacamole; give your guests options with a few different recipes (we have lots!). Style your backyard with piñatas, Spanish-style patterns, and vibrant colors.

Trade Party

What is a worker without their tools? Honor the traditions of Labor Day by hosting a trade party that celebrates the different trades (and unions) that keep things in working order. Dress up the average toolbox with party essentials and flowers for a cute and functional centerpiece. When planning your menu, think about serving something you'd love to pack for lunch, like these flavorful summer sandwiches. — Lauren Gordon

White on White

While it is no longer a fashion faux pas to wear white after Labor Day, it is still fun to send summer off dressed all in white. Insist that attendees arrive clad in only white and make sure your tablescape is pure as well. White sides as well as white desserts will make for the perfect spread. Just be careful when serving your guests so those pristine outfits stay clean. — Lauren Gordon
