Saveur Nominates Thug Kitchen As Best New Food Blog

Let's be real here; if we could make a list of the top food blogs of all time, Thug Kitchen would be one of them.

Luckily, Saveur seems to think so too, having nominated the foul-mouthed food tumblr as one of their best new blogs (voting to determine the winner ends tonight at midnight). Sure, the blog got a shout-out from uber annoying celeb Gwyneth Paltrow, but even so, Saveur's online editor Helen Rosner notes that Thug Kitchen was nominated multiple times. "Thug Kitchen is a legit food blog," Rosner told us over the phone. "It's a real site with recipes and original photography, and it just happens to use an irreverent voice to tell the culinary story it's trying to tell."

Of course, there are a number of other gorgeous blogs on the nominations list, but none use quite the level of profanity that Thug Kitchen does. And while some readers were turned off by the curse words ("If I buy a rap album... I expect it... but not from my Saveur," one Facebook commenter wrote on The Daily Meal's Culinary Content Network), it is humor writing. "There aren't that many blogs that combine this level of photography and well-crafted original recipes that all across the board happen to be vegan with a point of view that's well-deployed humor," Rosner said.

And sure, the profanity might be shocking, but Thug Kitchen isn't technically off-brand for the magazine. "I think anybody that thinks a blog with beautiful photography and clear recipes doesn't fit the Saveur brand, they don't know the brand that well," Rosner said. As for the curse words? "Yeah he says f*ck a lot, but we've probably said f*ck in print a couple of times, too." Props to them for sticking to their guns. Now we're going to Gizoogle Saveur (warning: foul language alert) to give them just a bit more street cred.
