Pennsylvania Festival Seeks Top Blueberry Dessert Bakers

It's that time of year when bakers are asked: Do you have a spectacular blueberry dessert?

Like how good? First-prize-worthy good?

If so, you'll want to enter the Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites' Best Blueberry Dessert Culinary Contest. It will be held as part of the annual Blueberry Festival, July 15 and 16. The festival, held at the historic Burnside Plantation, is a two-day family-friendly event that lets you indulge in all things blueberry such as pie, ice cream, beer, wine, and mead. You can also enjoy activities, crafts, and live music.

In previous years, the festival has offered multiple culinary categories for blueberry dishes, from savory to sweet. This year, it has boiled it down to one general Best Blueberry Dessert contest for two age groups — adults and kids 15 and under.

Judges will be looking for delicious flavor (30 points); texture (consistency, doneness and moistness, 25 points); outside characteristics (overall appeal and uniform shape and appearance, 15 points); originality (creative use of ingredients and recipe, 15 points); and process (ease or difficulty of recipe, 15 points).

The contest is open to virtually any type of blueberry dessert — from cookies and double-crust pie to crumb-topped muffins and cupcakes.
