America's Best States for Seafood

If you love seafood and live in one of these states, consider yourself lucky

Maine is renowned for its lobster.

The United States is a huge country, one that stretches from sea to shining sea, with an incredible bounty of fresh seafood to be found not only on the East and West Coasts, but the Gulf coast as well. But which states are home to the most amazing restaurants for seafood?

Seafood restaurants come in countless varieties. Unlike steakhouses, which are more or less all upscale (or at least expensive), seafood restaurants can run the gamut from expense-account-only to tiny roadside shacks. Think about it: If you want to serve high-end steak, you need to purchase your meat from butcher operations that process and distribute it. If you want to serve seafood and you’re near the water, all you really need is a boat.

In order to assemble our ranking of the best states for seafood, we started by consulting our own rankings of America’s Best Seafood Shacks, America’s 101 Best Restaurants, America’s 101 Best Casual Restaurants, and other best-of lists, which were all assembled by having the country’s leading culinary experts vote via an extensive survey. These states are home to plenty of great seafood restaurants, for sure, but they’re also home to an amazing bounty of seafood, period.

Thankfully, we’re living in an era when a restaurant in Las Vegas can ship in fresh seafood from Italian coastal waters on a daily basis, so if you happen to live in a landlocked state and are in need of fresh seafood, it’s not exactly impossible to track it down. But if you’re living in one of these states and love seafood, you should definitely consider yourself lucky.
