Chateau Ste. Michelle Artist Series Meritage 1994

Columbia Valley

Winemaker's Notes

This second in our Artist Series is a beautifully balanced blend of 58% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Mike Januik describes the 1994 Meritage as having an aroma that's darkly sweet-with black cherry, plum, currant-yet toasty with oak. Underneath, lighthearted whispers of tobacco. He notes lots of jubilant cherry, with lively interludes of spice, more oak, and supple tannins that give the wine both back-bone and tenderness.

About the Region

This large viticultural area, covering about 11 million acres with some 17,000 acres of vines, extends over a large part of central and southern Washington (and over the border slightly into Oregon). It lies at the same latitude as Bordeaux and Burgundy, with numerous soil types and microclimates, and grows all the usual suspects, with cabernet sauvignon and other Bordeaux grapes and, more surprisingly, the red Rhône varieties, doing particularly well.
