The Other Tequila Cocktails

On Cinco de Mayo, there are three things you are pretty much guaranteed: tequila shots, mariachis, and Margaritas. We have nothing against this holy trinity, but we want you to seriously consider shaking up your holiday traditions a bit this year.

While the Margarita is the world's most famous agave-based cocktail, there are plenty of other delicious concoctions that are worth your consideration. One of our favorites is the classic and incredibly simple Paloma, which combines tequila with fresh lime juice, grapefruit soda, and a pinch of salt. It's perfect for big parties, since you don't even need a shaker.

Another good recipe to make for a crowd is acclaimed author and Liquor.com advisor Gary Regan's Mink Coat and No Manners (pictured right). The herbaceous and spicy Don Julio Tequila tipple is a major step up from a standard shooter.

And don't forget that Mexico produces a second fine liquor: mezcal. This full-bodied and usually smoky spirit works well in The Oaxacan Punch, created by talented New York bartender Tad Carducci. The tasty drink also calls for fresh juices, bitter Italian amaro, and refreshing ginger beer.

Now as for mariachis, there is no substitute for the real thing.
