Super Bowl Spirit In Your Wine Glass
The Super Bowl is this Sunday and while many will happily celebrate this unofficial American holiday with beer, why not show who you're rooting for by the contents in your wine glass?
For fans of the San Francisco 49ers, you're in luck. With numerous wine regions so close, you have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to selecting a bottle to accompany a Colin Kaepernick scramble. Looking for something with a long and storied history in California, like the 49ers? Pick up a bottle of zinfandel. And don't forget the bubbly if, as the clock in the fourth quarter winds (wines?) down, victory is at hand. Make sure you have a bottle of Schramsberg on ice.
Fans of the Baltimore Ravens have plenty to cheer about when it comes to wine as well. How can you count out a state that, according to Maryland Wine, has a winemaking history that dates back to 1648? In 2011 Maryland boasted more than 61 wineries and produced almost 1.75 million bottles. Like Ray Lewis in his last season, Maryland wine will not be denied! And, if you need a Maryland winery to put on your radar, David White of the wine site Terroirist.com recommends Black Ankle Vineyards. White calls Black Ankle "Maryland's most buzzed about winery" and singles out their 2006 Crumbling Rock blend for its surprising showing in a blind tasting of Bordeaux blends from around the country and globe.
