Study: Female Breast Cancer Rates Higher In Flower Mound

FLOWER MOUND (CBSDFW.COM) - People have flooded Flower Mound City Hall for years with worries chemicals from gas wells are causing an abnormally high number of cancer cases, especially in children.

For a third time, state health services studied cancer rates and released the results Wednesday. The latest study broadened the parameters of earlier studies looking for a 'cancer cluster' in the city.

The study found children had a normal rate of leukemia, brain/central nervous system and liver cancers.

Additionally, it found the expected number of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in males and females.

But the study also found, "Consistent with previous analyses, female breast cancer had a higher than expected number of cases in the area."

Why is the breast cancer rate higher? The report says it could be because women have better access to medical care or screening in Flower Mound.

They could share common lifestyle factors or environmental or occupational exposure.

Or it could be random chance.

Flower Mound's mayor, Tom Hayden, said he's not alarmed since all three studies had similar results. But he said the city will continue its stringent air quality monitoring around gas wells.
