Taking inspiration from the innovation of Johnnie Walker Double Black — a masterfully crafted Scotch whisky that amplifies the trademark smoky and rich characteristics of Johnnie Walker Black Label — the team from Hella Bitter has created a unique at-home bitters recipe that showcases these edgy flavors. What's even better? The Johnnie Walker team also shares a classic cocktail recipe to go with your new homemade bitters. Click here to get more tips on how to make bitters.
Combine all ingredients in a 1-quart mason jar and cover. Then, set the bitters aside to macerate for 3-4 weeks. Patience is key!
Taste regularly to monitor the change in flavors, and once the desired flavor is reached, filter the liquid from the solid ingredients using a fine cheesecloth. Cut a square of the cheesecloth large enough to double over and cover the top of the mason jar, secure with rubber band. Gently pour the bitters into another clean vessel. Repeat straining process a few times to ensure there are no visible particles in the bitters. Once the liquid settles a bit more, some sediment may settle, that is normal.
Transfer the finished liquid into a cool bottle of your choice. We recommend visiting specialtybottle.com for some options (this recipe will fill five 2-ounce bottles). Droppers make adding bitters to your favorite cocktail easy and precise.
Stir over ice and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a cherry.
