Ohio Veterinarian Clinic Offers 'Pet Liposuction' For Overweight Animals
North Ridgeville, Ohio (CBS CLEVELAND) – An advanced veterinarian procedure being labeled "Pet Liposuction" is being used to treat overweight animals at a Northeast Ohio animal clinic that also offers laser surgery and underwater treadmill therapy for pets.
Veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Pentecost of Animal Clinic Northview in North Ridgeville said that the liposuction for pets is less of a cosmetic procedure, but instead is used to treat "benign fatty masses," also known as lipoma, which can worsen in older or overweight animals, WJW-TV reports. The non-invasive surgical procedure is drawing pet patients from multiple states in the region.
"You don't have the discomfort you're going to have with a major surgery," Pentecost told WJW of the lipoma surgeries that also require fewer anesthesias than more invasive procedures. "They can be really big, I had one that we took almost three-and-a-half liters of fat out of it."
And pet liposuction is just one of the advanced, new therapies and procedures bringing clients to the Northwest Ohio veterinarian center.
Underwater treadmill rehabilitation, weight management, laser treatments and endoscopy options are available as forms of less invasive treatments for pets.
Dr. Randy Hutchison tells WJW that the center is able to perform sonograms, underwater rehab programs along with world-class fertility treatments for pets.
"A lot of dogs that would've gone right to surgery because they swallowed something ... we can go down the mouth with the scope and pull it back up through the mouth," Hutchison told WJW. And although the cost of these less invasive procedures is a bit higher, small incisions, less pain and faster recovery times are better for all animals.
Scopes and other tools used at the clinic are making surgeries more effective and may open up the ability to diagnose and treat tumors in the future.
The owner of a French bulldog that had a tumor detected and treated in her nasal passage recently said that Babette's procedure was successful.
"She's great! Perfect," owner Margo Coleman said of Babette's speedy recovery. "She hasn't had any swelling or complications."
