Should you really be eating that bluefin tuna? Educate yourself with this app.

Your go-to food-centric mobile apps are probably Seamless and OpenTable, but if you want to make an impact on something more than just your satisfied stomach, consider downloading the newly redesigned Monterey Bay Seafood Watch app. Now you can discover sustainable seafood recommendations and search nearby Seafood Watch-approved purveyors that carry your fish of choice.

Meaning that, with this app, you’ll be able to make a small difference in populations of overfished, over-farmed sea creatures.

The app will also allow you to search for seafood by name — and sushi by Japanese name — and add your local sustainable seafood-friendly market or grocery store to the growing list provided by the app. The app is available for all Apple and Android devices. Pretty soon, you’ll become an expert on avoiding endangered species and supporting fishermen who practice safe, sustainable fishing.

“The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program is the most recognized and trusted source for sustainable seafood recommendations, and helps consumers and businesses choose seafood that's fished or farmed in ways that protect sea life and habitats, now and for future generations,” the press release stated.
