Freak Kitchen Accident Kills Woman In New York City Apartment

A New York City resident and psychiatric hospital worker was killed in a tragic kitchen accident inside her own apartment on West 31st Street in Koreatown on Monday afternoon. Mia Shorteno-Fraser, 34, was alone cooking in her kitchen when her clothes accidentally caught on fire, police told the New York Post.

By the time neighbors heard the smoke detector and the fire department arrived, they found Shorteno-Fraser's body in the bathroom, naked, with severe burns all over her torso and legs, and her clothes torn from her body where she had apparently tried to put out the fire.

The victim had reportedly been living in the luxury apartment building for several years.

"Oh my God I saw her yesterday!" a building worker told the New York Post, and a neighbor added that every apartment in the high-rise is equipped with sprinklers.

The specific source of the kitchen tragedy is unknown. When The Daily Meal approached a doorwoman at the complex on Wednesday she said, "No comment out of respect for the family" and neighbors that were walking in and out of the building seemed to have no idea about the deadly accident.
