Mike's Mix: Big Easy
Mike's Mix has moved to Saturday! Now, every Saturday Mike Augustyniak picks a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week he's tackling the Big Easy from Five Watt Coffee.
Big Easy
Start by making a flavored simple syrup by boiling together 1 cup of demerara sugar, 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of ground chicory and 1 teaspoon of nutmeg.
You can adjust the spices to fit your tastes. Let cool.
Then combine:
16 oz of cold press coffee over ice
1.5 oz of the chicory-nutmeg syrup
1.5 oz of cream
A dash of black walnut bitters by Fee Brothers
Shake and then serve, over ice.
Taste Test
I loved this drink from the moment I sipped it for the first time at Five Watt Coffee. It's rich, smooth flavors will transport you to The Big Easy – New Orleans – where chicory coffee is part of the fabric of coffeehouse society.
Chicory is easy to find at any co-op, spice shop or grocery store that has a large selection of spices. You can also keep the simple syrup to spice up your normal cup of morning Joe on a cold morning.
