Some 12 years after opening, Hugo’s has become somewhat of a Houston institution, a Mexican standout in a land in love with Tex-Mex. There’s a robust menu, a collection of regional Mexican dishes towhich Ortega gives modern flourishes – consider duck carnitas tacos, crusted chicken breast with peanut mole, and grilled rainbow trout stuffed with seafood tamal topped with pipián rojo. There’s also a seasonal menu, but you may want to take cues from The Chronicle’s Allison Cook and Houstonia Magazine’s Robb Walsh, who have singled out between them notable dishes like chile and garlic-braised lamb barbacoa that’s slow-roasted in agave skin; octopus al carbon; and the  beef cheeks with pasilla chile sauce.

  • Best margarita
  • Best brunch in Houston
  • The Sunday brunch is legendary, the vegetarian options are over-the-top good and the mole is like nothing else in town. [Eater 38 Member]
  • Ask for the ceviche sampler so you'll get some of everything. Outstanding fish and the Oaxacan Rita is an interesting drink choice, with mezcal.
  • Squash blossom festival menu is awesome. Ask for it (only available during the summer)!
  • The chapulines are a must!!!!
  • In the summer, look for executive chef Hugo Ortega's special seasonal squash blossom menu. Also on the menu: sauteed grasshoppers, anyone?
  • Really authentic Mexican food. Cabritas, nopales and plenty of ceviche's. -Tiffany Derry, Top Chef

  • Ceviche de atun is the best ceviche I've had outside of the Caribbean! Love it!!
  • Absolutely terrible. Waited an hour and a half to be seated even though we had reservations. Was hoping the food would make up for the lack of timely service, but I was severely unimpressed.
  • Try the ceviche! This place is great - ambiance and food! It's a top gifted spot on the Plumfare iPhone App.
