12 Things You Didn't Know About Santa

Some call him Kris Kringle, others know him as St. Nicholas, and of course he often goes by the name of Santa Claus. As familiar as he is to us all, however, it occurred to us that a lot of people really don't know very much about the guy. We wanted to find out more. While Santa himself was too busy to answer our personal questions, we got a lot of the inside scoop from his elves when they dropped off milk and cookies at The Daily Meal for our annual holiday party. They filled us in on everything from his cookie-eating habits to the sources behind the naughty and nice list. Mrs. Claus also spared a minute to tell us Santa’s favorite snacks for the sleigh and what he eats before he leaves the North Pole on Christmas Eve! Hint: it isn’t more cookies.

“The cookies-and-milk custom is derived from an older tradition, when families would stuff stockings with goodies for Santa and hang them by the chimney, his preferred mode of entrance, as a welcoming gift,” according to History.com.

Santa’s Favorite Milk

We know Santa loves his Christmas cookies, but what is Santa’s favorite milk to pair with his cookies? Almond milk? Whole milk? Chocolate milk?

After conversing with the top elves, we’ve concluded that Santa’s preference for milk changes depending on the cookies and county he is visiting. For example, Santa loves pairing a cold glass of whole milk with a warm chocolate chip cookie in America, but he also loves pairing strufoli with a freshly brewed cappuccino in Italy, where he enjoys his milk with espresso. He respects all traditions, including pairing vegan cookies with cold almond milk!

Holiday Drinks

Holiday Drinks

Santa loves a good Holiday drink. He even brought Starbucks to the North Pole, so he could enjoy a gingerbread tea latte and thick hot chocolate whenever he wanted. (For the record, he isn't too pleased with those plain red cups either.)

While Santa loves anything rich that tastes like a cookie, his favorite drink is classic Christmas eggnog — after he's finished driving his sleigh, of course. Since Christmas Eve is National Eggnog Day, this is a likely choice for Santa’s favorite. Though no one is sure what the origin of eggnog is, it’s said to be a descendent of the medieval drink called posset, a blend of sweetened and spiced milk curdled with ale or wine.

Mrs. Claus makes Santa a delicious homemade meal that he enjoys with all of his elves on Christmas Eve. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas!

The original Santa Claus was a monk named Nicholas who would travel to help the poor and sick, and had a habit of leaving coins in children's left-out shoes at night. This saint-to-be was born around 280 A.D. in what is now Turkey. So, how old does that make Santa Claus?
