Today’s First Course?
Chef, restaurateur, and activist Alice Waters is due to receive a huge honor from the president himself. Waters was named one of the recipients of the 2014 National Humanities Award, to be presented by President Obama September 10. The White House stated that she was chosen “for celebrating the bond between the ethical and the edible.” They went on to praise her holistic approach to eating, health, and education, described as “sparking inspiration in a new generation.”
If you love pizza, you may be inspired by this next story. Couple Tara and Sasha Bouis, once a teacher and programmer, respectively, are living out your dream life: A few years ago, they left their jobs to live full-time on St. Thomas, an island in the Caribbean, and recently restored an old boat, turning it into a New York-style pizzeria. Tara and Sasha took a week-long course at Goodfellas, a cooking school on Staten Island, to make sure their product was as authentic as possible.
This October, the Great Pumpkin may not be making a visit to Japan, but the Peanuts gang will! Snoopy and Charlie Brown fans can flock to the Peanuts café, opening in Tokyo October 2. The menu is inspired by the comic, with items including a goose egg sliders plate with four different types of sliders to represent the characters on the Goose Egg baseball team. There will also be a Beagle Scout s’mores skillet and old-fashioned peanut butter and chocolate chip milkshakes.
And that’s today’s Daily Dish. Stop by tomorrow for another helping.
