Pan dulce, or sweet bread, is a Mexican pastry and a particular specialty, in Houston, of the South Wayside Drive bakery.
The bakers had been working a late shift and could not leave the store due to flooded streets. The bakery was not cut off from electricity, so the men chose to spend the time that they were stuck baking for the displaced and those they anticipated would be in need of food.
The men used around 4,400 pounds of flour from the bakery to make the various sweet loaves.
El Bolillo’s manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent, “By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.”
Rightfully, the men are being hailed as heroes across social media.
People are really doing their best to help others during this devastating time. Notably, a Chick-fil-A manager sent a boat to save an elderly couple from Houston floodwaters.
