Chain pizza may get a bad rap, and there’s no denying that a lot of it fits comfortably under the “fast food” umbrella. But in reality, just as with non-chain pizzerias, the quality can range from fine (because there’s no such thing as bad pizza, after all) to downright delicious.
Every year, we round up 100 of America’s highest-grossing pizza chains, from huge international mega-companies to small regional ones, and ask you to chime in and vote for your favorites. We ask our readers to take into account convenience, menu diversity, the care put into making each pizza, the freshness and quality of ingredients, the atmosphere, the flavor and texture of the pizza and the overall experience.
This year, the top vote-getter was none other than Domino’s, which has nearly 16,000 locations worldwide, second only to Pizza Hut, which has more than 18,000. Domino’s offers five crusts, nine sauces, eight meats, seven cheeses and 10 vegetables, and on average the company serves 3 million pizzas every day. Domino’s launched its first non-pizza item, breadsticks, in 1992, and today other non-pizza menu items include Specialty Chicken (fried chicken chunks with pizza-style toppings), wings, hot sandwiches, pastas and desserts including a chocolate lava crunch cake. According to the company, its top-selling topping is pepperoni, followed by sausage, bacon, mushrooms and pineapple.
