A funky little place on Freret St. in New Orleans, Dat Dog, is offering wild hot dog flavors with a huge twist on what you’re used to seeing in the American BBQ classic.

This small hot dog restaurant is actually a shed, opened after Hurricane Katrina by Skip Murray. The line typically wraps around the corner, and some of the most demanded menu items include the white trash fries, fries topped with chili, sour cream, guacamole, onions, cheese, and jalapeños, as well as the alligator sausage dog and the Guinness dog. They also give you a huge option of fries, including Andouille Sauce Fries and Crawfish Etouffe’ Fries. Their hot dog options surpass just meat hot dogs, too: the Sea Dog is actually a tempura-battered white cod filet.

Dat Dog also offers a huge list of national and international beers to wash down the food with, including a favorite local, Canebrake beer. The hot dogs are a little expensive, around $8 or $9, but they are large and stuffed with toppings, and there is spacious outdoor seating. Monday through Saturday from 4pm to 7pm there’s Happy Hour so get down to New Orleans to see what all of the fuss is about.
