Curiocity: Mike's Mix — Solstice
Every Friday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week, he's tackling the signature cocktail of one of the Twin Cities' most respected establishments ... one with a number of very strong flavors.
Recipe: Solstice
1 1/2 oz Saffron Vodka
3/4 oz Suze
1/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1" sprig fresh thyme
- Gently press the thyme in mixing glass and add ice
- Add ingredients and stir
- Strain into chilled cocktail glass with 1/4" spot of kosher salt on rim
Garnish with thin cucumber slice and small sprig of fresh thyme
Taste Test
Saffron—the most expensive spice in the world—is a common flavor in Mediterranean & Middle Eastern cuisine, but it's a pretty uncommon flavor in the glass. You'll need to make your own saffron-infused vodka for this one, because you can't buy it in stores. To infuse, place 4 or 5 saffron threads into a bottle of vodka and let it rest for 2 or 3 days. When the liquid takes on a yellowish color and hint of saffron scent, strain out the saffron and get to work!
About Ward 6
Ward 6 represents Eastside St. Paul. According to their website, "the structure at 858 Payne Ave. was built by one Magnus Lindgren around 1885. Lindgren apparently owned and operated a saloon here until he was bought out by the Hamm's Brewery in 1903."
