We went to work to figure out which cookie dough will fool your guests into believing you slaved in the kitchen to soothe their chocolate cravings. Our editors tasted and ranked the cookies from best to worst in a blind taste test to find the dough that most aligned with their high standards for the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

We selected popular store-bought brands based on consumer availability, and limited our cookie dough search to basic chocolate chip. All of the doughs included required no additional work besides slice, scoop, or break and bake.

Our editors evaluated the cookies based on taste, appearance, and dough-to-chip ratio. The doughs were scored, tallied, and ranked accordingly. Surprisingly, for cookie doughs with a limited variation in ingredients — flour, sugar, oil, butter, and chocolate chips — these cookies varied significantly in appearance. From golden brown to a deeper gray in color, and in texture from soft and chewy to crisp and crunchy.

Check out our ranking starting with the least favorite and ending with the most favorite store-bought chocolate chip cookie dough brands.
