By late summer in this part of the country, you have probably seen the best of the produce that tends to bolt, or run to seed, in hot weather. Soon, lettuce, spinach and other 'light' leaf crops will be drawing to a close. But the best of the rest will still be in full swing. Squash, cucumbers and tomatoes will still be looking great at your produce market. Apples and pears will be harvested and smelling and tasting simply delicious. Best of all, the later summer crops will be starting to show up now too; think fresh pumpkins for pie and reams of beautiful corn. The South has weather so conducive to growing that we can enjoy this bounty far longer than the majority of the country. So eat up and enjoy!
