Yebisu Creates Matcha Green Tea Beer

Matcha powdered green tea is a popular flavor in Japan, and it's so widespread that sometimes it pops up in very unexpected places. Now there is even matcha-flavored beer, and apparently it's pretty good.

According to Rocket News 24, the matcha beer is being served at two different Yebisu Bar locations in Japan, one in Kyoto and one in Osaka, and it's actually a beer cocktail made by combining matcha with Yebisu beer. It's made to order, and the bartender mixes the matcha with a bamboo whisk before combining it with the beer. In the glass, it looks like a very green beer with a frothy head, and a little sprinkle of matcha powder on top.

Matcha has been combined with chocolate, ice cream, and even white wine, but it's an unconventional pairing with beer. Beer and matcha are both pretty bitter, so it would seem like the combination could be overwhelming. Rocket News 24 reports that the combination is actually pleasant, and it's bitter but refreshing. The matcha beer cocktail is only available at two Yebisu Bars in Japan, but check out some of our best matcha recipes for some other ways to take advantage of the flavor.
