Starbucks Secret Menu: The Ultimate Guide

UPDATE: How to order 25 of the craziest, most off-the-wall, and off-the-menu drinks from the Starbucks secret menu

Starbucks Secret Menu: The Ultimate Guide
Here's how to order the craziest, most interesting off-the-menu drinks from the Starbucks secret menu.

Starbucks customers know the situation all too well: You're standing in line, reciting the precise order of the five different descriptors that constitute "your drink," when you hear the person in front of you make a request so foreign sounding it completely throws your concentration. That's right, they've gone and ordered some crazy-sounding drink off the Starbucks secret menu.

Starbucks Secret Menu: The Ultimate Guide

A Zebra Mocha? A Grande Green Eye? A Crunch Berry Frappuccino? Say what? They may sound like a far cry from the standard drip cup or your simple Mocha Frappuccino, but these drinks are not Starbucks folklore. And really, considering that the coffee giant has in years past boasted offering some 87,000 different drink combinations, that such "secret" items exist should not be too surprising.

As it turns out, many of your fast-food and restaurant chain favorites have "secret" menus — places like Taco Bell, Wendy's, Subway, Chipotle, and even Jamba Juice. Of course, the one at beloved West Coast cult favorite, In-N-Out, is arguably the most famous. So well-known, in fact, that there's really not much "secret" about it anymore. Starbucks' off-the-menu items are certainly not as widely publicized as In-N-Out's, but they are known enough to the point where you won't get a dirty look from the barista when you ask for a Double Dirty Iced Chai.

Read on for an in-the-know guide to the "secret" drinks at Starbucks, including additional secret drinks submitted by readers and Starbucks devotees across the country and around the world.

Just remember that not all of these oh-so-clever names are universal, so if you’re planning on ordering one, you better know how to tell your barista to prepare it. (That, and to be prepared to pay a little extra.)

Starbucks Secret Menu Drinks

Green Eye: Three shots of espresso. (Note: At some Starbucks it's called a Blue Eye.)

Dirty Chai: A Chai latte (hot or iced) with a shot of espresso. Two shots makes it a "Double Dirty" or "Extra Dirty" Chai.

Zebra Mocha: Sometimes called a "Penguin Mocha," a "Marble Mocha," or a "Black and White Mocha," this drink mixes the white chocolate mocha with the regular mocha. Adding raspberry flavor makes it a "Red Tux" Mocha.

Chocolate Dalmatian: A White Chocolate Mocha with java chips and chocolate chips sprinkled in.

Cake Batter Frappuccino: Originally vanilla and almond syrup added to a Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccino. Since almond syrup is largely unavailable, some recommend subbing in hazelnut syrup and white mocha.

Captain Crunch/Crunch Berry Frappuccino: A combination of hazelnut syrup (though some folks contend it should be toffee nut) with a Strawberries and Creme Frappuccino.

"Short" Drink: The Tall drink's smaller, less expensive younger brother.

French Press: Starbucks will brew any of the coffee they sell in a French Press.

Super Cream Frappuccino: Ask for a "Super Cream" version of your Frappuccino and you'll get half a cup of whipped cream blended in.

Affogato-Style Frappuccino: Order any Frappuccino "affogato-style" and you'll get a shot of hot espresso on top of instead of it being blended in.

Triple C's: Cinnamon Dolce Latte with caramel syrup and chocolate mocha syrup.

Biscotti Frappuccino: You have to have to buy a package of biscotti cookies separately and ask your barista to blend them into your Frappe.

On the slideshow for this article an employee mentions a Pumpkin Spice Chai. Let me just say that I was given this on accident (my only guess is that these New Englanders mistook my Southern accent when I said "pumpkin spice" and thought I said "pumpkin Chai") and it was disgusting.

Here's an idea: How about you just go out for ice cream, because if you order most of that crap, it's obvious you don't actually like coffee.

Love it!!!

I personally prefer matcha tea infused with natural caramel flavor from Red Leaf Tea. Blend it with milk and ice cubes into a nice frappe. It's to die for. I can not stop drinking it.

Starbucks allows their drinks to be infinitely customizable, and just because some twat decided to make dumb ass names for their custom drink doesn't mean it's actually a thing.

once someone thinks of it, names it, and it begins circulating & is ordered or offered by and to quite a few people it IS a "thing". There is a secret menu, it's getting larger and more well known but it is NOT an official menu, nor are the drinks advertised or posted in the store. For fun people have chosen to call this "unofficial" and special menu "secret".
You are obviously a bitter, friendless, unhappy, jealous person. Happy people do not knock other peoples fun just for the heck of it. I'm sorry you feel so bad but please just don't say anything at all if all you want to do is crap on other people and their fun.

Several years ago I was turned on to a drink by a barista at Starbucks. It's called the Tuxedo. You can get it hot (espresso) or frozen as a frappuccino. It is basically White Chocolate Mocha with breve instead of milk. The drink is very rich and I recommend adding a shot or two to offset it.

If you elect to add a shot to a frappuccino, always elect for affogato. The drink expands and it is rare that the remaining portion is given to the patron. They usually throw it out. If you want to receive the full shot, have them pour it on top.

A lot if not most of it too is barista created. My barista here in Countryside Clearwater makes a drink for me called "Undertow" it's a layered drink of syrup (your choice or theirs), cream then an espresso shot (or 2). it makes for a good caffeine buzz to wake u up in the morning!

As a barista, I never knew these drinks. I had to learn from customers and other baristas who knew what they wanted. In reality, these drinks aren't STARBUCKS drinks, they're custom made drinks. That's totally fine, but just don't be surprised when you come across a barista who won't know what you're talking about. When I first stated training, I hated when customers would come at me with these crazy drinks because I had no idea what they were. Now, it's somewhat okay because I have somewhat knowledge of what my customers want. Oh, and the grasshopper is not made like that at our store. We make it as a green tea frappuccino with white mocha and peppermint syrup with chocolate drizzle on top; just an FYI :)

Oh, and the caramel apple pie frappucino.
Thank goodness I left before the new frap recipes started, but back when you had the cream base it was 1/2 base and 1/2 apple juice. Some cd syrup and caramel.

I think i miss working at Starbucks...

This is many of these drinks aren't "secret" as much as they are bored employee creations! And The Captain Crunch frap is totally made with toffee nut.

what I don't get is the thin mint frap has no peppermint in it - false advertising :) but yet, the cookies and cream has mint in it???? Odd....

Here's my favorite - the pie chai or Thanksgiving in a cup!
In a grande get 2 pumps chai and 2 pumps pumpkin (it has to be equal amounts.) soy milk, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle!

And swamp water -
Green tea lemonade and a scooop of matcha. Sounds and looks hideous, but it's delicious!

And then there's the oatmeal cookie frap, which is good too!

..and green tea lemonade with some raspberry.

....and the list goes on :)

That's the beauty of coffee, you can dress it up however you want.

Customers, with the exception of short size and french press, DO NOT go in ordering any of these and expect your barista to know what you mean. If you want any of these, go in and order exactly what you want in detail. DO NOT order a crunchberry frappuccino. Your barista will probably think you're on crack. Order a strawberries and creme with toffee nut or hazelnut. As for some of those drinks, your barista MIGHT know what you mean, but there are some regional differences. Where I am, most baristas will know what a black eye is. Other places, they may think you're crazy, and say "oh, you mean a shotgun" when you explain what you want (which would have been easier in the first place to avoid confusion, wouldn't it?).

Also, yes, affogato style USED to be on the menu. Several years ago. Your barista probably has no idea, so order drizzle and a shot on top.

And yet they still can't make a macciato without dumping caramel and vanilla in it.

I never been to a "St*rbucks", and God-willing, I never will.

I am a barista and have made a few of the mentioned drinks. The Grasshopper consisting of Macha, Frap chips & peppermint in a Frap. Tastes like mint chip ice cream and a personal favorite. Also one fellow Barista can make a amazing Churro Frap. His own creation at least as far as I know.

Has anybody heard of the smore frappuccino?? By brother got one one day and I loved it...just don't know how to ask for one??

If you just register your card, you automatically get syrup and milk alternates for free. I've been getting my Sugar Free Vanilla Breve Latte for the price of a regular latte for years! ( I don't know if that would apply to multiple syrups, though. Any little bit helps.)

It does apply to multiple syrups. The operating system only allows you to charge for one syrup. With exceptions to mocha and caramel drizzle.

I miss the honey latte...when it disappeared from the menu, I asked them to make it and they don't have the honey syrup anymore. We tried with regular honey, but it wasn't even close. I was so sad.

My post got deleted. Lol.

I used to love something called a Green Tea Frappacino but they don't have Melon syrup anymore? I am SO SAD about that.

I know but it isn't as sublime!

You can still get a Green Tea Frappuccino, they just make it with Classic sryup now.

Apple Juice Orange Blossom
-Steamed Apple Juice with NO water.
-One bag of Tazo Orange Blossom Tea

A perfect tasty tea alternative for us non-coffee drinkers. Made for me by a lovely Barista in my regular Portland, Or. store while I was feeling a bit icky one day.

ok ok my fav i get everyday is a drink they had on the board for years but took it down, blueberry/green tea frappachino, since theres no blueberry sauce, they substitute raspberyy now, put the sauce in the cup and dump the green tea frapp in the cup on top of it. always add extra macha.

Anyone ever heard of a "Mexican Latte"? 1shot Caramel, 1 shot Cinnamon, 1/2 shot Vanilla, 1/2 shot White Chocolate, topped w whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. OMG YUMMY! Got this off the beaten path in southern NewMexico...not sbux, but they'll make it if ya tell em how!

almond syrup went away 4 years ago. still miss it. sigh

I tried the upside-down caramel machiatto. Only problem was that it wouldn't stay in the cup for very long. Damn gravity.

I order a black and white mocha every day. I call it that because the Baristas as my local Starbucks seem to call it that most often. I've been to many Starbucks where someone will actually say, "You mean a marble mocha??" (or tuxedo, or zebra, but NEVER penguin!) in a way to indicate that I ordered it incorrectly. That always cracks me up because I've been ordering it long enough and from enough stores to know that it really doesn't have an offical name and correcting me is just pretty silly! Oh, and sometimes I specify that my tall should have "1.5 pumps of each, please" and I'll get the reply "yeah, that's how we make it!" while others say "okay we usually do 3 of each." Just an interesting ordering experience at times.
