The smell of some bright orange mushrooms that grow on lava flows in Hawaii caused half of female test subjects to have spontaneous orgasms.

Scientists in Hawaii have discovered a mushroom with special powers that put mere hallucinations to shame, because apparently the bright orange mushroom has the power to make women have orgasms just by smelling it.

The world is full of rumored aphrodisiacs, but according to IFLS the unnamed orange mushroom is the real deal. It is exceedingly rare and only grows in Hawaii on relatively young lava flows that are between 600 and 1,000 years old. Scientists John Halliday and Noah Soule studied the mushroom to investigate the claims of its aphrodisiac qualities and discovered that it really did work, but reportedly only on women.

In a paper in the Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, the scientists said that half of the female volunteer test subjects experienced spontaneous orgasms upon smelling the mushroom. The study authors suggest that "hormone-like compounds present … may have some similarity to human neurotransmitters released during sexual encounters."

Male test subjects just said the mushroom smelled disgusting and noticed none of the other effects, but everyone else might want to check out some of our best mushroom recipes.
